Vistara's network need not be aligned with its parent Singapore Airlines: Phee Teik Yeoh, CEO

Mumbai: Vistara's CEO said the airline doesn't need to align with its parent Singapore Airlines' vast global network, once it gets the right to fly international flights.
"First and foremost, I need to dispel the myth that Vistara's network needs to be aligned with Singapore Airlines. 70% of the travellers actually travel westwards, away from Singapore to Europe and US. I don't know how this conclusion comes about but if you look at the way we have been spreading our presence overseas (on our own), we are partnering several carriers. We have recently struck (interline) partnerships with British Airways and Japan Airlines," Phee Teik Yeoh told a press conference on Friday.

He was speaking ahead of the government's announcement of its new draft aviation policy. Players such as Vistara have been pushing the government to change a set of rules that now require an Indian airline to operate domestic flights for 5 years and scale up to a fleet of 20 planes before being considered for international operations. The government still hasn't taken any decision on what to do with the 5/20 rule. Yeoh said the current policy compares poorly with liberal aviation policies of countries such as Dubai which are gaining at the expense of Indian carriers.
