14kg gold seized at Dhaka airport

Officials at the Dhaka airport have seized a large consignment of contraband gold from a flight that flew in from Malaysia.
“We found 120 gold bars hidden under a seat of Regent Airways on Friday morning,” customs’ Joint Commissioner Sohel Rahman told bdnews24.com.

He said the gold was worth about Tk 70 million in the open market.

No arrests have been made so far over the seizure.

Bangladesh has become an important conduit on the gold smuggling route, the Asia-Pacific Group (APG) on Money Laundering said recently.

Gold seizures, especially in airports of Bangladesh, are at an all-time high.

On Feb 2 this year, 61 kgs of gold was seized from the toilet of a Bangladesh Biman airlines arriving from Dubai.

Many such seizures have been reported from Dhaka and Chittagong airports.
