Kozhikode: The Malabar Development Forum wants Air India to restore its Airbus 321 aircraft in the Calicut-Dubai-Sharjah sector.
It said the A320 aircraft operating now had less carrying capacity and therefore reduced export of perishable cargo, mostly vegetables and coconut, from Malabar region to the United Arab Emirates.
In a statement issued here, the forum’s working chairman K.M. Basheer said that after Emirates stopped operating its wide-bodied aircraft in view of the partial closure of runway at Calicut Airport for re-carpeting, all business class passengers took AI’s A 321. It had 80 per cent occupancy in business class.
Many foreign nationals used to travel business class to the Malabar region for treatment for various ailments.
A stretcher for seriously ill patients could be accommodated by removing the first three seats in the A 321. This was not possible in A 320.
