Airports Can be Places That Make One Happy: Experts

BENGALURU: A group of national and international experts in the aviation industry and academia believe that airports can be converted into destinations in themselves.  Speaking at the International Airdev Conference at the Department of Civil Engineering at IISc, they spoke of how airports can become spaces that make people happy.

Prof Rosario Macario from Instituto Superior Tecnica said, “We toured several airports. The Zurich Airport has a hospital. The Dubai Airport is a mini-city in itself. Airports can explore tourism and have hospitals, casinos and garden spaces etc. to make them destinations from in themselves that will attract more people.”

P S Nair , CEO-Corporate of Airports Sector, GMR Group (managing the Delhi and Hyderabad Airports) said, “There are 476 airports/airstrips in the country, of which only 93 are operational. We expect a

faster growth in Tier II & III cities than Tier I cities. Selective airports out of 396 defunct aerodromes/airstrips have to be made functional through a PPP mode.”
