Aviation policy to breath new life into CIAL plans

The Revised Draft National Aviation Policy 2015, released on Friday, is likely to breath new life into Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) plans to set up a cargo village and to turn Kochi into a hub for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO).
The draft policy says that cargo and MRO, along with ground handling and ATF infrastructure, in an airport will be treated as ‘infrastructure’ enjoying various concessions including under the Income Tax Act.
CIAL sources said that the new recommendations would certainly help CIAL to scale up its cargo operations, now logging about 65,000 tonnes annually. It can easily touch one lakh tonnes, sources said pointing out that the airport authority had a blueprint for larger cargo handling facilities.
The draft policy also pointed out that MRO business for Indian carriers alone was worth around Rs. 5,000 crore annually. Ninety per cent of this is spent in countries such as Sri Lanka, Malaysia, UAE and Singapore.
