British woman aviator lands near Delhi

New Delhi: British aviator Tracey Curtis-Taylor is flying 13,000 miles across 23 countries in three continents in an open cockpit vintage biplane retracing a historic flight and has enroute landed on the outskirts of Delhi on Tuesday.

At Hindon Air Force station outside the national capital, Ms. Taylor interacted with the vintage flight crew of the Indian Air Force (IAF) as well with IAF women pilots.

Ms. Taylor said the real purpose of her flight was to celebrate what Amy Johnson achieved in 1930 — the first woman to complete the epic journey when she flew solo from London to Sydney in just 19 days at the age of 26.

Flying a vintage Boeing Stearman biplane “Spirit of Artemis,” she began her journey from Farnborough airport in the U.K. on October 1 and is expected to take 14 weeks to finish. On the aim of the flight she said, “It’s a tribute flight not aimed at breaking a record. I am celebrating aviation and promoting females into aviation.”
