Chandigarh: The Haryana government spent over Rs 94 lakh to ferry VIPs on aircraft in July and August this year, an RTI reply revealed. According to the reply, the government chartered planes and helicopters 24 times during this period.
An eight-seater aircraft used by the Haryana government ferrying VVIPs had crashed in March last year at the Chandigarh Airport during take-off. The aircraft was declared unfit for repairs. The Haryana government then decided not to purchase a new aircraft citing austerity measures. The services of their pilots too were terminated.
After the BJP government came to power, it was announced that travel by Shatabdi and Volvo buses would be encouraged. The private airlines charge around Rs 73,000 per hour while the government aircraft would have cost only around Rs 30,000, sources said.
