A anxious India today questioned Nepal's rationale in turning to China for critical fuel supplies amid tensions between New Delhi and Kathmandu over a blockade enforced by protesters at key transit points along their border.
Before the protests blocked the border, Nepal imported over 70 per cent of its petroleum through the Raxaul-Birganj crossing, Swarup said.
On trade relations between the two countries, Swarup said: "Nepal-India trade ties are multifaceted, diverse, deep-rooted and the stand on their own merit and have a natural logic".
Kerung is a few 25 km away from the border Rasuwagadhi. "In what way this agreement is going to help, it is to be seen", the MEA spokesperson said. Following the request, China signed a framework agreement with Nepal on Wednesday for supply of petroleum products.
NOC is receiving only one-tenth of the grant assistance on Saturday owing to geographical disparity and weak road conditions.
This is the first time in Nepal's history to import fuel from other countries, breaking the monopoly of import from Indian Oil Corporation.
