Intense smog reduces visibility at IGI airport

New Delhi: Intense smog developed near the IGI airport on Friday and visibility reduced from 2,300m in the morning to 800m within a few hours.

According to the IGI Met department, "Sudden favourable winds started from north-northwest and moisture from previous day's rain retained pollution particles causing a build-up of smog".

K Jenamani of Met said the winds were carrying pollution particles which suddenly shrouded the clear skies. "On Thursday night and Friday morning, there was not much of smog to disrupt visibility. The respite was due to cleaner easterly winds. But when winds over Delhi turned towards the north-northwest at 10-12 kilometres per hour, which blow mainly from Punjab-Haryana side, smog developed very quickly," Jenamani said.
