Trichy: The Trichy airport intelligence officials, on Friday night, caught a 45-year-old man who was trying to smuggle a large stash of foreign currencies in several denominations of Singapore dollars, UAE dirhams and Malaysian ringgits worth about Rs 10 lakh.
Police have taken custody of M Maariappan, who hails from Pudukottai, and are questioning him. After getting information about the currency smuggling attempt, security measures have been intensified at the airport.
According to the police authorities here, the foreign currencies were kept inside the passenger's baggage, which when passing through the security scanners and the X ray machines, clearly revealed the notes.
Maariappan was trying to board the Tiger Airways flight to Singapore late on Friday night with the money when he was caught.
