Quarantine station inaugurated at airport

Kochi:  South India’s first health and quarantine station was commissioned here on Monday by the director general of health services Jagdish Prasad at the Cochin International Airport Limited.

Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Prasad said that more such stations were on the anvil at Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai and Thiruchirappally.

The centre for vaccination against yellow fever will commence operation in the same building soon.

The facility has been set up in the wake of fears of the spread of yellow fever. Passengers landing in Kochi and suspected to be harbouring the virus will be kept under observation at the station.

Managing director of CIAL, V.J. Kurien, who presided at the inauguration, said that the quarantine station was a long-standing demand and that passengers landing in Kochi and suspected to be harbouring the yellow fever virus used to be sent to Delhi for observation till now.
