Regional operators flay FDI rise in civil aviation

Vijayawada:  The NDA government's FDI policy in civil aviation sector drew lukewarm response from regional air transport operations.

C.T. Chowdary, CEO of Aircosta Aviation Private Limited, on Tuesday said at a round table that the FDI policy with reference to regional airport services is unlikely to yield desired results on the aviation front. He said none of the regional airline operators would benefit from the government's decision to allow foreign investment up to 49 per cent under direct route. Even as the latest civil aviation policy aimed to give a big push to the government's regional connectivity plan by allowing 49 per cent foreign direct investment in non-scheduled air transport services, it was unlikely to happen, he observed. "Civil aviation sector, in general, was confronted with stunted financial growth. It is high time the regional air transport operators receive a helping hand from the government. Instead, entry of foreign investments may hurt the regional air transport operators badly", Chowdary said.
