Weight norms unrealistic: AI - Appeal to relax rules for crew

New Delhi, Nov. 5: Air India, which had earlier this year decided to ground overweight flight attendants, has changed course to argue that the government-prescribed weight norms are too "unrealistic" and too harsh on the older cabin crew.

The state-owned airline has now requested the aviation regulator to relax these norms despite having identified about 130 cabin crew members, mostly women, as "too heavy" in September and initiated the process of grounding them amid charges of "sexism".

Some cabin crew members, however, attributed the airline's newfound concern for them to fears of a staff shortage during the upcoming peak season, and suggested the axe would only be delayed till the rush ended.

Airline officials declined comment on the charge. But they could not explain the management's sudden change of heart after it had taken a series of steps to implement the weight norms over the past one year.
