Vellore: With INS Rajali, a naval air station at Arakkonam, turning into a make-shift airport, nearly 500 persons boarded civil and military aircraft bound to various destinations across the country from here on Friday.
On Thursday, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation had given clearance to operate commercial flights from INS Rajali after the Chennai airport was shutdown due to inundation.
On the first day of functioning as an alternative airport, INS Rajali saw three private airliners operating from its premises.
“Of the six aircraft that were cleared to operate from here on Friday, three landed at the naval air station. The flights operated by TruJet, SpiceJet and Indigo left with nearly 200 passengers to Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad,” Captain S. K. Kuruparan, spokesperson of INS Rajali, said.
