Chennai: Domestic and international air fare from Chennai have dipped after heavy rains and floods that threw life out of gear has triggered a largescale cancellation of year-end holidays. With holiday crowd staying put, the low fares have come as a blessing for last minute travellers who usually find it difficult to get a seat closer to New Year.
Fares to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and a few other cities have dipped by around 25 to 30% for travel in the next few days when compared to the fares during the corresponding period last year.
Seats are available on most of the domestic flights and fares remain low because a large number of people have cancelled their holidays while others did not make fresh bookings because of an uncertainty over holidays for now whether schools will scrap their holidays or not.
Metro Travels managing director Basheer Ahmed said, "Fares are usually very high during December last week and January first week. A lot of seats blocked for tourists have now been released by airlines because tours have been cancelled or rescheduled. This increased supply in seats have caused air fares to decline. Fares are cheaper by Rs5,000 at least on most of the routes."
