AIR INDIA’S NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: GOING VEG IN ECONOMY CLASSON DOMESTIC FLIGHTS

Air India is stepping on to the same page as the head of state Narendra Modi - at least as far as its economy class is concerned. From January 1 it plans to serve only vegetarian hot meals in the economy class on its domestic flights with a flying time of 61 to 90 minutes from New Year - a move that has raised eyebrows from passengers and airline staffers.
A circular about hot meals in economy class signed by Captain DX Pais, general manager (cabin crew) on December 23, states, "It has been decided to provide all Indian vegetarian hot meals in economy class on all domestic sector flights between 61 and 90 minutes duration from January 1, 2016."
Tea and coffee too will be off lunch- and dinner-time flights.
The circular marked as 'Must Read' has been issued from the office of the executive director, customer services, and is marked to all cabin crew and in-flight service personnel.
A crew member explained the move saying that a flight between 61 and 90 minute duration gives the crew a window of 30 to 40 minutes to serve passengers.
"During takeoff and as the aircraft begins to ascend, there is no scope for carrying out any service. The galley equipment has to be fastened at this point. The time available for service does not permit us to offer passengers the option of choosing a meal. Also, while non-vegetarians would eat a hot vegetarian meal, it won't be the other way round," an official said.
