Airport parking agents in dock

KOLKATA: Bidhannagar City Police has decided to write to the Airport Authorities of India (AAI) officials, both in Kolkata and the headquarters in Delhi, and urge them to take adequate steps to stop `excesses' of parking attendants outside the city airport.Sources said they will be pushing for time-bound action. A request for a showcause and a termination of contract has not been ruled out.

"We have had enough of their wrong practices. We had to be on the road twice to stop protests arising out of their behaviour. We even had to carry out arrests to control the situation. This cannot go on forever. This is becoming a major law-and-order headache," said a top Bidhannagar commissionerate officer.

As of now, the police have decided on a three-prong strategy to control the situation. "We will implement these measures to ensure smooth entry and exit of passengers. A discussion with the AAI on this matter will take place soon," said another officer.

According to ADCP (airport and traffic) Shivani Tiwari, these steps will help in maintaining a proper queue and controlling the situation till a permanent solution is worked out. Cops will set up a joint control room at the airport along with AAI officials where passengers can lodge a complaint. Police will ensure that there is no parking at either the entry or exit approaches. Finally , the cops will also set up CCTV control room to monitor live feed.
