Bad weather: All 3 chopper sorties suspended in Kullu

Manali: Turbulance in weather conditions over the Rohtang pass on Wednesday forced an emergency chopper flight to fly back to Kullu. All three sorties for the day were also suspended. The first sortie was scheduled between Bhuntar airport of Kullu and Stingri in Lahaul. The second and third sorties were scheduled for Udaipur and Tandi Diet respectively. Nearly 20 passengers are ferried to Lahaul and similar numbers of passengers were brought back to Manali from Lahaul.
Generally, the emergency flight service to Lahaul starts in January after news of road blocks due to heavy winter snowfall. This year however, the state government has strated this service in December.
But the bad weather conditions above Rohtang pass forced a chopper pilot to take U-turn back to Kullu in its very first sortie of the season on Wednesday.
Liaison officer at Bhuntar airport Yograj Dhiman said the helicopter had flown to Lahaul on Wednesday but poor visibility forced chopper to return back to Bhuntar.
