It’s that time of the year when fog disrupts flight operations and throws your schedule out of gear.
To minimize inconvenience and ensure passengers do not get stranded at the airport for long hours during winter months, airlines have started issuing advisories. Airport authorities have also geared up to deal with the situation.
Budget carrier GoAir, which operates flights to most north Indian cities from its main base in Mumbai, is the first among all Indian carriers to come out with an advisory.
“Due to winter/fog season please check your flight status four hours and two hours prior to departure time to avoid any inconvenience by sending SMS G8 flight number to 57333,” GoAir said in a communication to passengers.
Other airlines said they were fine-tuning their strategies and readying their call centres and SMS alert systems for passengers.
“The safety of our passengers is of paramount importance and authorities will not allow any take off and landing unless they are satisfied with the visibility level. So passengers must understand and co-operate,” said a senior official of an airline.
Cancellations and rescheduling of flights during winter is normal in North India, more specifically at Delhi, Chandigarh and Srinagar. However, passengers flying to or out of other airports, especially Mumbai, are also affected as incoming flights arrive late and flights to fog affected airports do not take off until improvement in runway visibility.
