Christmas surprise: Air fares stay grounded

LUCKNOW: Planning to fly to your favorite destination this Christmas? You are likely to get a fair deal in air fares, thanks to uncertainty in flight operations caused by foggy weather.

Known to go through the roof during festive season, air fares this time are under check. This is despite Christmas falling on Friday, allowing people to have an extended weekend of three days at a stretch. The trend is quite noticeable for not only destinations like Delhi but also Mumbai which, otherwise, largely remains unaffected by foggy weather.

While in the past festive season, like during Diwali, air fares to Delhi have witnessed a sharp rise, at times crossing a mark of Rs 5,000 (In 2012, air fares skyrocketed to over Rs 10,000), the air fares during this Christmas are hovering in the range of Rs 2,900 to Rs 3,300 per passenger. So is the case with the flights to Mumbai which have their air fares fairly reasonable at Rs 7,500 to Rs 8,300 per passenger.

"People are apprehensive of buying tickets in advance because of uncertain flight operations this season," said city-based tour operator, Prateek Hira. He insists people are choosing to buy tickets at the last moment only in view of the weather. "That is keeping fares under check," he said.

Fares for morning and late evening flights are ostensibly controlled because of chances of low visibility hampering flight operations. That's what has been happening in the last few days—flights are extremely late, at times by more than three or four hours.
