CIAL's Plan for Third Ground Handling Agency Put Off

KOCHI: The Cochin International Airport Ltd’s (CIAL) attempt to appoint a third ground handling agency in the wake of rising gold smuggling cases through the airport has run into rough weather owing to various reasons.

The CIAL floated global tenders, inviting proposal from both domestic and foreign agencies, for the purpose a few months ago. It had to postpone the bidding scheduled on November 25 following a request from the qualified agencies and existing players in the airport.

A C K Nair, Airport Director, told ‘Express’ that the bidding would be held only after the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation publishes the new national aviation policy, 2015 as the published new draft policy 2015 has some ambiguities.

However, sources close to the existing players in the airport where at present, two agencies, Air India and BWFS, provide comprehensive ground handling for the airlines operating here, said CIAl’s  hasty decision to appoint a third ground handler was ill-timed.
