Demand to fast track airport expansion

Organisations campaigning for Calicut Airport’s development want the State government to fast track the process of land acquisition and carry out a thorough survey of the expansion requirements. But, there is scepticism over any work beginning before the Assembly elections.

“We are planning a campaign on social media, in support of the demand for expanding the airport at Karipur,” says Abdullah Malieckal secretary of Calicut Chamber of Commerce. “Our major demand is the runway expansion that will enable return of wide-bodied aircraft, and through this more passenger and cargo volume,” he says.

“It is good that the government agreed to acquire land. But, it should speed up the process of identifying alternative lands for the owners,” Malabar Development Forum working president K.M. Basheer says.

Malabar Chamber of Commerce president C. Mohan stresses that “whatever needs to be done, should be done in the next two months. Otherwise, the Assembly elections will hold up the entire process”.
