Enhanced safety at Kolkata airport due to new ATC system

New Delhi, Dec 2 (PTI) The Air Traffic Control System installed at Kolkata airport by AAI last year has resulted in increased situational awareness, enhanced safety and operational efficiency as well as fuel savings for airlines, Rajya Sabha was informed today.
The system, commissioned in November last year, provides for direct routings and thereby reduction in carbon emissions, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma said in Rajya Sabha in response to a question on the issue.

Sharma also said AAI has installed Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR), which helps in better coverage and the air routes, at 19 airports including Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Cochin, Trivandrum, Ahmedabad and Mumbai, among others, as part of the ATC system upgradation work.

The 400-km range MSS radar is a state-of-the-art secondary surveillance radar with improved range and detection capabilities deployed for the surveillance of Indian airspace.
