INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT PLAN GETS BOOST

The dream project for an international airport near Jamshedpur has suddenly received a boost with Jamshedpur MP meeting Tata Steel senior officials earlier this week with land proposal. MP has taken initiatives in this regard.

Speaking to media at his Bistupur office, Jamshedpur MP Bidyut Baran Mahto said that he recently met Tata Steel’s vice-president of corporate services Sunil Bhaskaran and asked the management to take steps for setting up of an international airport.

“Due to hurdles in land acquisition for their airport project at Gamharia, Tata Steel management has gone slow in this regard. During the meeting I suggested them about two proposals where they would not have to face any land acquisition hurdles for their project. The first proposal was the abandoned airstrip at Chakulia-Dhalbhumgarh (in Ghatshila sub-division) which is close to NH-33 and can be linked through arteries to city and the second was vast portion of forest land at Kandra (in Seraikela-Kharsawan district),” the MP said.

Tata Steel had announced an airport meeting international standards spread over 528 acres at a cost of Rs 400 crore in Gamharia block of Seraikela-Kharsawan district. The international airport project of Tata Steel at Gamharia block had hit land acquisition hurdle. The international airport project of Tata Steel with a runway of 10,000 feet at Gamharia block of Seraikela Kharsawan has got green signal from Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in 2012.

Moreover, a technical feasibility report for the airport was submitted by the Seraikela-Kharsawan district administration to the then Chief Minister Arjun Munda in 2012 and the green signal from the state government came in the same year. But the project has not made much progress since then due to protest from locals over land acquisition issues despite forest clearance for nearly 90 per cent of the required land.
