The survey of land identified for acquisition for extending the runway of the Kannur international airport project here rebuts the initial concern that hundreds of families have to be rehabilitated from the area.
The survey to identify the areas to be acquired has been completed and the report has been submitted to District Collector P. Bala Kiran. They survey has been delayed as local residents stalled it for weeks to protest against the plan for extending the runway from the existing 3,050 metres to 3,400 metres. The action committee of the residents later relented following assurance given by Ports Minister K. Babu and the district administration.
When contacted, the Collector told The Hindu that the number of families to be rehabilitated from the identified area is much less than what was anticipated before the survey.
