Lt. Governor A.K. Singh has called for the cooperation of the Tamil Nadu Government in releasing a few tracts of land to enable the expansion of the Puducherry airport.
Participating in the 26th meeting of the South Zone Council chaired by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh at Vijayawada, the Lt. Governor said the much-delayed expansion of Puducherry airport required acquisition of land from adjacent district of Tamil Nadu.
An expanded Puducherry airport, which would then be able to attract airlines to operate wide-bodied aircraft, would serve as an alternative to Chennai airport in case of emergent situations as was witnessed during recent floods, when it was shut down.
Mr. Singh sought the co-operation of State of Tamil Nadu for expansion of Puducherry airport, as it would be mutually beneficial.
The Lt. Governor also apprised the chair about the extensive damages caused due to the unprecedented rains and the co-ordinated efforts made with Tamil Nadu, to take preventive measures, which mitigated the loss of life and damage to properties.
He proposed the constitution of a Union Territory Disaster Relief Fund (UTDRF), on the lines of Calamity Relief Fund (CRF) for the states, to meet relief requirement of Union Territories during disasters.
