Chennai: Union minister of civil aviation P Ashok Gajapathy Raju said that preventive measure including raising height of radar and communication equipment, improve drainage system inside operations area to prevent airport from getting affected in flooded. The ministry is also planning to prepare a manual to equipment airports to handle calamities.
"A few suggestions have come locally for corrective action. This includes steps to ensure that radar and communication equipment was not affected. These suggestions would be implemented in addition to conducting a study to assess the impact of the river on the airport. The airport officials have also given a set of requirement that need to be addressed immediately. We will work out a time frame in the coming days."
He did not specify the extend of loss incurred by AAI because of the flooding and shutdown but said that loss was there, the equipment damaged was expensive. "The compound wall was broken in 17 places. Chain fences were installed which will at least keep the animals away. We need to take inputs from metro rail engineers also because they have a site near the airport. The Adyar river is flowing under a runway, this was not the case earlier."
