Mid-air collision averted in Jammu

Hundreds of flyers had a close shave on Monday when two aircraft got perilously close to each other in Jammu.
An Air India (AI) Airbus A-320 was approaching Jammu to land and an IndiGo A-320 was taking off from the temple city when the two aircraft breached the minimum separation of 1,000 feet and were just 400 feet apart.
The traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS) alarm went off in cockpits of both the aircraft, indicating another plane was dangerously close.
"The other aircraft came within 400 feet of our plane. Our pilot got traffic alert and he immediately did some maneuvering to avoid a mishap," an AI official said.
A spokesperson for IndiGo said: "IndiGo flight 6E 554 en route to Jammu from Delhi received a traffic advisory alert mid-air, as an Air India aircraft was in the vicinity.''
"This is the first level of warning that gets activated, wherein a pilot needs to be vigilant of the situation but take an evasive action only when a resolution advisory is activated.''
The spokesperson said IndiGo aircraft are fitted with T2CAS, which are the latest available in market with enhanced features.
