Kozhikode: The Malabar Development Council has demanded that the Union government restore the embarkation point for Haj pilgrims from Calicut International Airport in 2016.
A meeting of the council here on Thursday urged the State government and the State Haj Committee to take up the issue with the Centre. It also demanded immediate steps to reinstate the airline services that had been temporarily stopped owing to re-carpeting of the runway at the airport.
The first phase of the renovation of the runway (2,850m) would be completed in April next while the strengthening of the turning pad of the runway had been completed on November 12, council president C.E. Chakkunny said.
The airport had been partially shutdown for the runway work from June 1 to ensure safety of the flights.
The Karipur airport had been the embarkation point for Haj pilgrims from the State for the past several years. This year the embarkation point was shifted to Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery.
