Mobile connection around the city airport is poised to get better as telecom operators will not need to run around to get no objection certificates (NOCs) from either the civic body or the Airport Authority of India (AAI). A digital system has now made things easier and permissions can be received within two weeks instead of two months as was the case earlier. The initiative is being tested on a trial basis and it is expected to be available for the telecommunication industry by next month.
The development seems significant considering the fact that the ministry of telecommunication had recently pulled up the mobile companies for not caring about complaints of call drops from mobile users. The ministry had proposed a rupee 1 fine per call drop, which the telecom companies are opposing. According to airport sources, due to logjam, thousands of applications seeking NOCs for telecom towers are awaited, most of which are in metros like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and other bigger cities like Bangaluru, Ahmedabad, etc.
According to AAI, which operates most of the civil aviation airports in the country, the new system has been initiated as part of the government's "ease of doing business" initiative. The telecommunication companies are required to take a NOCs from AAI before applying to the civic authorities for the same. The delay in the bureaucratic process had resulted in poor connectivity around the areas surrounding the airport.
