HYDERABAD: Following the deportation of several Indian students who travelled on Air India flights to San Francisco recently, Air India on Monday stated that it received a communication on December 19, from the US Customs and Border Protection Agency that two universities, namely Silicon Valley University and North Western Polytechnic College are under scrutiny and their students who arrived in San Francisco were not allowed to enter the US.
According to Air India, so far, 14 students who travelled to USA, claiming admission in the above mentioned universities have been deported from San Francisco. Later, around 20 more students from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, with admission in same universities were denied entry on Air India flight on December 19 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad.
In a press release on Monday, Air India, stated that “Students travel on a one-way ticket to US and in the event of deportation, the student incurs huge expenditure to buy a ticket back to India on first available service. Further, seats are often not available on any airlines to travel back.” Air India has decided not to accept any tickets booked for travel to take admission in these two universities.
“Air India will start accepting students travelling to the US, to join the above universities, at no additional cost, as soon as clearance is received from Air India US office, for their travel,” the press statement by Air India, said. After cancelling the already booked tickets of such students, Air India has waived all charges involved and offered full refund of air fare.
Silicon University denies charges
Meanwhile the Silicon Valley University (SVU), sent a clarification to the students who secured admission with it. In a mail, sent to one of the students from Hyderabad, the university’s Associate Academic Dean, Simon Anu clarified that the university has not been ‘blacklisted’ by the US government.
