Mumbai: The Mumbai airport has successfully wrested a 7-acre plot at Sahar from an encroacher after an 11-year-old court battle that snaked its way to the Supreme Court. Hours after the apex court ruled in their favour on Monday, authorities promptly fenced off the property.
As per conservative estimates, the land, situated at villages Marol and Bapnala adjacent to Hotel Leela, is worth at least Rs 1,000 crore. On the other side of the legal fight was 85-year-old Edward Paul Machado.
Aviation experts said the property, which is not a part of the land parcel used for flight operations, can be used for several purposes to generate revenue. "Deposits and lease income from real estate development is a key source of funds for the airport development," said an analyst, suggesting a way to utilise the prime land.
The illegal takeover by Machado, an agriculturist, came to light in 2004, prompting the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to move court. AAI produced government records to show that it acquired the piece of land in 1993 and leased it to airport operator MIAL in 2006.
