Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh government is scouting for 5,000 acres of land for the proposed greeenfield airfield for the State's new capital Amaravati.
The task of identifying land for the airport has been assigned to Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA). Among the areas shortlisted by CRDA are Thullur, Mangalagiri and Amaravati. However, the chances for Mangalagiri being selected are slim as it is a hilly area and might potentially cause problems to the airport signals. Secondly, a National Highway runs parallel to Mangalagiri. Experts said that this might pose problems for night landing of aircraft. That narrows down the options to two - Thullur and Amaravati.
Ring Road Dilemma: The AP government had estimated that to setup an airport per international standards atleast 5,000 acres of land is required. Also, there is a proposal to have 180 kilometers of ring road around the capital city of Amaravati. In this backdrop the CRDA wants the airport to be close to the ring road similar to the Shamshabad airport in Hyderabad.
