Authorities seek police help to check kite flying near airport

Bhubaneswar: Authorities of Biju Patnaik International Airport here have sought help from police to check kite flying in the vicinity of the airport as it poses danger to aircrafts flying at a low altitude. The initiative is important because kite flying is part of Makar Sankranti, which will be celebrated on Friday (January 15).
"Apart from big aircrafts, several helicopters, small aircrafts and choppers land in the airport. Choppers and helicopters fly at a low altitude and some kites also fly at that altitude. Second, big aircrafts come to a low altitude while landing and takeoff. So we have requested police to stop kite flying near the airport," Kumar told TOI.
Kites can easily get into aircraft engines. "We have come across stray instances of kite flying near the airport's operational areas. But, the volume of kites may be more during the festival and two days after that," the director added.
