Chennai: Poor visibility due to smog hampered the operations at the airport here, leading to diversion and delays on Friday morning.
For about 30 minutes, heavy smog caused by the burning of tyres, plastic and old materials to mark bogi, the beginning of Pongal festival, reduced visibility to merely 250 meters as against the minimum visibility level of 500 meters, sources said.
Airport authorities said two international flights Muscat-Chennai Oman Airways flight and an Air Arabia flight from Dubai were diverted to Bangalore, while in the domestic sector, three flights bound for New Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune were delayed by about half hour.
