'Calicut airport not for wide-bodied aircraft'

Kozhikode:  The Calicut International Airport is not designed technically to operate wide-bodied aircraft, Civil Aviation Minister P Ashok Gajapati Raju today said.

Talking to reporters after an interactive session with leading trade chambers in the city, he said at present the airport is not suitable to operate jumbo size aircraft.

''We are governed by international civil aviation rules and we will have adhere by it,'' he said

Director General of Civil Aviation has to issue a fitness certificate to facilitate the airport operate big aircraft, he said.

The Minister said he cannot interfere in laid down procedures in connection with functioning of any airports in the country, he said ruling out request for it from chamber represenatives.
