Centre gives nod to AP international airport

The Union Civil Aviation Ministry has given its nod to a proposal to develop an international airport in the north coastal Andhra district of Vizianagaram, brushing aside environmental objections and protests by farmers.

Eyebrows are being raised in political circles since Bhogapuram, where the proposed project is coming up, falls under the Lok Sabha constituency of Civil Aviation Minister P Ashok Gajpati Raju.

There have been protests from farmers across 12 villages in the coastal district, demanding cancellation of land acquisition order for the proposed Greenfield international airport, about 40km from the port city of Visakhapatnam.

The main opposition YSR Congress Party, CPI and CPM had extended support to the protest groups. Supported by the opposition parties, the local farmers and members of other civil society groups formed "Bhogapuram Airport Vyathirekha Porata Committee" (Anti-airport struggle committee) to intensify the agitation.
