Early 'Take-Off' for new Terminal at Cial

Kochi: The second international terminal being constructed at Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) will see the light of the day much ahead of its scheduled opening in May this year, thanks to the upcoming Assembly elections in Kerala. Speaking to Express, Airport officials who did not want to be named said though the opening of the new terminal was planned in May 2016, it has been decided to inaugurate the new terminal in February itself along with a commercial complex, new four-lane road to the Airport and a rail overbridge nearby.
Only 80-90 per cent of the works of the new terminal have been completed and various electrical and mechanical works  are still going on at the terminal. Though the state government would formally inaugurate the terminal in February along with other facilities, the commercial operations can be started only by the pre-decided time of May end or June first, said the officials.
According to the Airport officials, the new 15 lakh square feet international terminal being built at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore will have state-of-the-art facilities. Once the new terminal is commissioned, the present domestic terminal will be shifted to the old international terminal and the present domestic section will be converted into a business terminal for regulating chartered flights or utilised for other business purposes.
