Aurangabad: Thick smoke emanating from the Naregaon dumping yard has become a major problem for flight operations from the Aurangabad airport, especially during the evening hours.
Pilots and airport authority officials have complained to the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) about the fumes generated because of rampant burning of garbage at the dumping yard, which is in the vicinity of the city airport at Chikhalthana.
The situation has become worrisome to the point that the airport authorities are fearing possible termination of two evening flights from the city to Delhi. Three airlines offer services from Aurangabad to Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Tirupati and Chennai. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has received complaints from pilots about poor visibility due to the dense smoke engulfing the air near the airport.
Aurangabad airport director Alok Varshneya said a meeting was held with municipal commissioner Sunil Kendrekar on Tuesday where the garbage burning issue at the dumping yard was raised.
