GMC: Screen passengers at Attari, Amritsar airport for Zika virus

Amritsar: The microbiology department of Government Medical College (GMC), Amritsar, has suggested screening of passengers with flu-like symptoms at Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport and Attari border as a preventive measure to halt the possible arrival of dreaded Zika virus in the country that is causing havoc in various countries and has already reached the Americas.
Apprehending that Zika virus could penetrate India through international ports, associate professor and principal investigator, viral research and diagnostic laboratory of GMC Dr K D Singh told TOI that they had suggested for regular screening at the entry points in Attari and at the international airport, especially of the passengers having travelled in the affected-countries in the recent past.
He said though there was no reported case of Zika virus in India so far, given the fact that it was transmitted by the same Aedes mosquitoes that spreads dengue and chikangunya, which were common here, there was dire need to take pre-emptive measures.
