GTDC counters demur to Aguada heli-tourism

Calangute: The Goa tourism development corporation (GTDC) and Pawan Hans have expressed surprise at the opposition by some locals in Candolim and the Candolim panchayat to the helicopter joy rides which are to be inaugurated this weekend.
In a statement on Friday, GTDC and Pawan Hans have described the objections as 'frivolous and baseless', and stated that helicopter joy rides will not cause any noise pollution, nor turn the waters rough or damage the eco-sensitive areas of Candolim and Sinquerim.
Pawan Hans has pointed out that presently the Bell-206 helicopter is being deployed for joy rides, which is a two-bladed single engine helicopter with extremely low noise signature, as compared to any other machine. 'The helicopters are being flown at more than 500ft above the ground level, which further reduces the noise. As such, the noise of a helicopter is much less than other commercial airlines. The landing and take-off phase is about 30 to 40 seconds and the down draft of the rotor (air) does not damage the flora and fauna of the area. The landing is being done on a hard surface that does not transmit any vibration to the surrounding area,' the joint statement read.
