Thiruvananthapuram: In a major gold haul, the Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate seized seven kg of gold from a passenger who arrived at Trivandrum International Airport (TIA) from Dubai in the early hours of Friday.
The gold, worth around Rs 1.80 crore, was seized from Shahjahan, 31, hailing from Kollam, during an inspection, after the accused alighted from the Emirates flight EK 522 at around 4.15 am.
One consignment, weighing 4.35 kg, was found concealed by making a mould on the metal base of two iron boxes and the remaining quantity was found concealed inside the portable transformers kept inside the baggage. The smuggling was carried out under the pretext of transporting electrical appliances.

According to Sree Parvathy, Assistant Commissioner, Customs, a probe has been initiated to find out the source of the consignment.
“The interrogation is on and an arrest will be officially recorded soon. He is just a carrier. So, a detailed interrogation is required. He was nabbed following a tip-off,” she said.
The accused was intercepted after a team of sleuths were stationed at the arrival gate of TIA at the time of declaring their goods.
