Plane truth on summit tarmac

Calcutta: When it comes to the success or otherwise of investment jamborees, there are lies, damned lies and statistics. Then, there are the vast empty spaces that marked Calcutta airport during this weekend's Bengal Global Business Summit and told their own story.

Populating the airport's 60 parking bays (for all aircraft) were just four private planes, indicating the level of big business's interest in the two-day event that ended on Saturday.

Mukesh Ambani's Airbus 319 occupied bay number 43 on Friday. Its size - all-economy-class A319s can seat 140 - told of Ambani's worth.

The other three, all medium-sized business jets, flew in steel maker Sajjan Jindal, media magnate Subhash Chandra and a politician: Union minister Nitin Gadkari.

At the last Vibrant Gujarat Summit a year ago, Ahmedabad airport had struggled to find space for the 60-plus private planes that touched down.

"We had a problem accommodating the 60-odd private planes as there is limited parking capacity at Ahmedabad airport. Most of these aircraft were carrying industrialists," Ajay Chauhan, Gujarat's director of civil aviation, said from Ahmedabad. "The private planes were flying off to nearby airports to be parked, and returning to pick up the guests."
