Kolkata: Sleuths on Thursday seized 1 kg gold, hidden in the side panel of a seat on a Spicejet flight, coming from Bangkok. The gold bars are valued at Rs 46 lakh.
The haul has brought the lens on the role of a section of employees in the smuggling racket, which seems to be operating in spite of the air intelligence unit of the customs department suggesting a few measures to catch insiders. Last year, the AIU arrested airport employees, all ground-handling staffers, in three cases.
"Involvement of aviation company employees and ground handling staffers is alarming . While not all of them are involved with smuggling rackets, a section of them work hands in glove with them. This is alarming as they have access to any point in the airport," said a customs official.
