'Second Runway Likely in Two Months'

Chennai: The Chennai airport is planning to enhance its capacity by launching round-the-clock operations on the second runway in the next couple of months, according to the Airport Authority of India director Deepak Shastri.

Speaking to City Express, Shastri said the secondary runway would improve the capacity of passenger traffic at the airport.

“We are now handling 30 aircraft per hour. With the secondary runway, we can operate 35 aircraft per hour,” he informed.

The secondary runway, which was extended across the Adyar River, is being used only for day time operation and does not have the instrument landing system.

Meanwhile, Chennai Airport is re-carpeting the main runway at a cost of `40 crore. It is supposed to be completed by June 2016 but that doesn’t seem likely.
