Surveillance enhanced at Tiruchi airport

Security has been scaled up and surveillance enhanced at the Tiruchi international airport consequent to the terrorists attack at an Indian Air Force base at Pathankot in Punjab.

A multi-layer security arrangement has been put in place following a red alert issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security and the headquarters of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which guards the Tiruchi airport round-the-clock.

Patrolling and surveillance has been increased on the city side of the international airport from where foreign flights to various overseas destinations depart.

CISF personnel have been posted at the city side to mount vigil from the departure area to the main gate round-the-clock. Random checks of baggage carried by passengers at the departure side had been stepped up by the armed CISF personnel deployed at the entry of the new international building.

Airport sources told The Hindu that Quick Reaction Team of the CISF had been strengthened and sniffer dogs of the force trained in detecting explosive substances had been pressed into service.
