Trivandrum Airport to Make a Leap with Parallel Taxi Track

Thiruvananthapuram: In a major infrastructure boost, the Trivandrum International Airport will get a parallel taxi track (PTT) facility that will enable airlines to operate their flights on time, thereby reducing the wait for passengers to reach their destinations. The project, envisaged a few years ago, has now been cleared of hurdles and the work has started.

Airport Director George G Tharakan says that the project will be completed by December 2016 by meeting international standards and at a cost of Rs 62 crore. A parallel taxi or taxiway is a path for aircraft at an airport connecting runways with aprons, hangars, terminals and other facilities.

It will help the airlines to quickly take the aircraft to bay through PTT after landing and clear the runway for other planes to take off or land. At present, a landing aircraft runs all the way to the end of the runway 14 (in the direction of the All Saints College) or to the end of runway 32 (in the direction of Vallakkadavu) and takes 180 degree turn and comes back (back tracking) almost 1,000 m to the apron. During this time, Air Traffic Control will not allow other aircraft to take off or land.
