Tiruvananthapuram: The demand for setting up an exclusive police station for Trivandrum International Airport is gaining momentum. An ‘Airport Police Station’ manned by a police team with hands-on experience in dealing with cases related to the airport, including passport and smuggling cases, has been a long-standing demand from the police force to strengthen the policing in and around the Airport and the nearby sensitive coastal area.
Though the City Police handed over a proposal with the draft of the new police station to the government three months ago, the government is yet to decide on it. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) had even sent a letter to State Police Chief expressing its consent in giving away ten cents of land beside the Amayizhanjan canal near Ananthapuri Hospital. The former AAI director had also pointed out in the letter that it would only release the land and the remaining activities, including construction, should be taken care of by the police itself. However, nothing has turned out positive for the City Police.
ccording to a senior police official, as many as 16 to 20 criminal cases are being registered in Valiyathura police station, which is now taking care of the cases related to the Airport. “Most of the cases reported are fake passport cases, visa fraud, Immigration violations, human trafficking and smuggling cases. The local police can’t handle so many cases as they also need to look after the law and order situation in other areas.
