Mumbai: Non-availability of necessary gadgets to scan a prosthetic limb cost a 24-year-old female passenger a humiliating 45 minutes during the security check-in at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Domestic airport.
She was even asked to remove her thigh-down prosthetic leg and submit it for scanning along with other baggages while she waited nearby for the procedure to complete.
While the passenger, Antara Telang, took to Twitter to voice her angst, Central Industrial Security Force’s (CISF) Vijay Singh said, “We are not answerable to anyone. We cannot risk other passengers’ safety for one passenger. We followed the government’s protocols.”
Singh added that following this incident there is no discussion to change the methodology of scanning disabled passengers.
According to Telang, she was on her way to Bangalore on January 30 when the incident occurred. Her flight was to leave at 6.30 am. When she went in for the security check-in, she was made to wait for 45 minutes during which, despite repeated requests, the security officials did not agree to use an electrostatic detector device (EDD) machine to scan her prosthetic limb.
According to her she has faced similar ordeal on at least eight other occassions at the Mumbai airport. “I have travelled from Delhi and Bangalore airports as well. They always arrange for an EDD machine to check the prosthesis,” an infuriated Telang said.
