District administration eyes night-landing facility to start air services

Kolhapur: The district administration has decided to push for the creation of night-landing facilities at Kolhapur airport in its bid to start air services from the city.
Officials said if the night-landing facility is created at the airport, smaller aircrafts can start operations. This move, in turn, would start air connectivity between Kolhapur and other major cities.
Kolhapur district collector Amit Saini told TOI, "The night-landing facilities can be created with a few lakhs of rupees but the service is mandatory for running the airport. Every plane originating from Kolhapur early in the morning will return in the evening. Hence, the night-landing facility is required so that businessmen and other professionals can return to Kolhapur by night."
The city airport is currently non-functional. Officials said the Airport Authority of India will take another three years to complete the airport expansion. Owing to the hurdles related to the land acquisition and related payments, the work on the airport expansion has already been delayed.
